Configuring 2 Cisco Aironet 520G AP's

To whom this may concern,

I'm a newbie on here and I'm hoping that someone could please help because I'm also new to Cisco products as well. I do have some experience with Cisco CLI and setting up some of there routers and switches but not so much experience with there wireless products. These two AP's are up and running and connected to a Unified 500 series controller. Both AP's run to that controller and are being powered by POE so I though that I could just open up a browser and configuring them through that. I have tried many different browsers thinking it was a browser issue but that wasn't it because my problem is that I can see the web portal for both AP's. I can see all of the settings but when you try to make any change like setting up a SSID which is what I need to do. Then when you hit apply none of the changes get saved so that's my issue I don't know what's causing this and I have tried connecting to the AP's using telnet which I can.

But after I enter the login credentials I can't enter the config terminal mode to create a SSID that way either. So I'm sure that I'm missing probably something either easy and forgive me my ignorance and for asking any kind of dumb question and for being new. But we all had to start somewhere and I'm trying to learn more Cisco and more of there wireless products. I have a copy of the config setup as well if someone would like me to copy and paste so maybe you could get a better look at what's actually setup in these AP's. So if someone could help me ASAP I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank You,

Scott Kurtzal

Hey Scott,

What credentials are you logging into the AP with? I haven't used the 520Gs before but sounds like you're getting a read only options or something.

Hi Ric,

Thank you for responding back to me because I was getting a little worried thinking that no one would LOL. I'm using from what it looks like is there Admin credentials but there also the only credentials that i have so that could be a factor. I work for a IT consulting company and just started a few weeks ago so I'm still learning most of our customers network setup. There phone system and AP's were put in a couple years and since then there wasn't much documentation on them other than there static IP's to connect to them and there login credentials. I did notice in the web GUI that the SMNP said read only so I'm not sure if that could play a big part.

You could probably tell by now that I don't have a lot of experience with Cisco. So please forgive me if I make any incorrect statements. I have had another Tech look at these to with me and he couldn't make any changes to the SSID in the web GUI either. We also have tried a telnet session to the AP's and making changes through the command line and still nothing. These AP's are also POE running into a Cisco Unified 500 series. I have also attached to a note pad file with the saved configs for one of the AP's. So if you would like to look at the config and see if there might be something in there that's causing this issue.

If you think of anything else to check for just let me know and I will try to get some more information for you. Thanks!

Ha interesting password. I would remove the file you've posted *just in case* as there's some sensitive info in there. Password 7 can be cracked with a simple online tool.

The AP/Technology you have is pretty old so if anyone is complaining about wifi performance then that is the reason. Your security isn't great by running WPA which is fairly easy to crack.

Are you using the username "Rcommon" to login? That has a privilege level of 15 so you should be able to make changes with that user.

If it comes to it - you can always copy that existing config then wipe the AP and start from scratch with a new username/pw combo that gives you the rights.

Yes the username that I have been logging in as is the RCommon name which is the only username that we have on file for those AP's. My next solution was to do what you mention, as to copy the original configs and then wipe it clean. Install the config file that you sent me and try that.

The other issue was that these AP's are POE and the client doesn't know what happened to the AC power cords that came with them because I would have to plug my laptop directly into the AP's Ethernet to reconfigure them correct? My other question that I wanted to ask you was do you think the Unified 500 series Firewall Wireless LAN that the AP's plug into. If that is causing them to not save any changes because I know that it has a built in firewall from the specs that I researched on that 500 series. I'm not sure if that's really considered a wireless controller for wireless access points?

This whole setup that they have is for there VoIP phone system which is way more system then they need. They use a wireless Cisco handset as there phone and it connects to the wireless antenna that's built into the Unified 500s. That antenna doesn't have the range to cover the whole building so they keep dropping calls if they leave that area. Which those AP's were installed years ago to help coverage for this issue but for some reason either the AP's weren't finished being configured. They have most of the basic configs as you can see and a static IP but there not broadcasting anything at all. That's pretty much what I'm trying to accomplish with which was suppose to be an easy deal just going in and creating a SSID and password.
