Fail to upgrade AP2802 with AP9120 as Master

Hi forum,

Do you have experience in implementing EWC-AP (91xx series with 17.5.x IOS-XE) as Master AP in a network with AP2802 (Aire-OS 8.3.150) as subordinates? Or with similar versions of OS.  I experience that the AP2802 fails during image upgrades and end up physically corrupt (still cannot receive full power after 20 sec on the reset button) . I am using SFTP server for upgrading according to Cisco documentation.

I can see from "show intall log" in CLI of Master AP that the ap3g3 image uses 1h to download with a fail message which is a abnormally long time, however uploading the same file from the SFTP server to Master AP flash takes 10min from CLI so I cannot see that there is anything wrong with SFTP server nor transfer speed.

Any suggestions?

I actually think changing 17.5 to 17.3 won't make any difference.  I think your problem is the very old 8.3 on the 2802.  I would upgrade the 2802 to 8.5 IRCM latest https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286304510/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JF14i or preferably 8.10 latest https://software.cisco.com/download/home/286304510/type/286288051/release/15.3.3-JK5 before trying to land it on the EWC.

Scott made a good point about trying TFTP - there was a bug (can't remember the details) that corrupted file transfers to AP when using SSH (so likely also SFTP) and the workaround was to use telnet and TFTP - not SSH.

Have you tried tftp by chance?  Is everything local to each other?  I personally only have implemented EWC with 91x0 access points.

It might be that the step is too huge going from 8.3.150 - 17.5. Cisco (Norway) tells me to try a downgrade of the AP9120 to version 17.3
