Hi

This is a historical problem. Theorically, Clients should spread around just fine. Access Points is able to tell them that it is full so that they can prefer other AP, but the problem is that clients doesn´t hear it.

the  beacons sent out to the clients have important information about Access Point load and RF condition, but clients ignores it.

The algorithm used by clients vendor only cares about RSSI. So, consequently, the higher signal will always win. That´s lead us to the stick client problem, roaming problem, etc, etc.

All they have to do is read and follow what the network tells them through the beacons.

There are features, to do this in software, but this usually causes various issues (Client Load Balance, Client Band Select).

Today you would do this with good AP and Antenna placement. Modern clients are fairly good in selecting a fitting AP. Of course this also depends on the expectations for the kind of traffic. Is it just some light browsing on mobile phones? No problem, easy to do. Do you need near real time data transmissions, then plan this very exactly.

What you could do, for example, is by using external directional antennas, look at the AIR-ANT2566P4W-R for example. More types of antennas: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/wireless/aironet-antennas-accessories/product_data_sheet09186a008008883b.html

good input from Flavio and Patoberli, one addition thing I would add is keep the APs at least 40 to 60 Mhz apart for better performance for e.g.

AP1 on 2.4 on channel 1

AP2 on 2.4 on channel 11

AP1 on 5Ghz channel 36

AP2 on 5GHz 48

-hope this helps-
