HREAP on the LAN

Are there any performance benefits to enabling HREAP (local switching) when there is a local controller present? I am aware of the benefits of users staying authenticated when the remote RADIUS server is unavailable.

I assume that when doing so, the AP traffic will not tunnel back through the controller, similar to HREAP over the WAN. Are there any disadvantages to this? Does one loose any RRM, IPS or location tracking capabilities?

Any other considerations are appreciated.

In your particular case, when I brought down the WLC for maintenance (I broke it), the LAPs just continued with their work and didn't try to even go and search for the backup controllers.

I recently attended a Cisco course on WLAN, and if I remember correctly, the instructor mentioned that a lot of the EAP auth methods are not supported in HREAP.

He throughly discouraged H-REAP if you have a local controller...
