If the AP is lightweigth (CAPWAP) enable, you can see the version of the AireOS code the controller is running with the next command:
(ap)# #show capwap client config
configMagicMark 0xF1E2D3C4
chkSumV2 32067
chkSumV1 29146
swVer 8.5.160.5
(...)
But the good place to look into this version is inside the controller:
(WLC) >show sysinfo
Manufacturer's Name.............................. Cisco Systems Inc.
Product Name..................................... Cisco Controller
Product Version.................................. 8.5.160.5
RTOS Version..................................... 8.5.160.5
Bootloader Version............................... 7.6.100.0
Emergency Image Version.......................... 7.6.100.0
Yo cannot see the IOS version in that format unless you check your current AireOS software with proper IOS version of the AP here https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html
