Issue with Airplay after iOS 6.1.1 update? Look no further.

Dear Support Community,

After a recent Apple iOS update for the iPad it was found that the airplay devices (Apple TV) were no longer found on the network only by those who had updated. Those who had not updated were still able to see the Airplay devices. What happened was that Apple in their update has changed the Service that Airplay uses to advertise itself (either intentionally or not is still unknown). The service AirPlay used to run on was _airplay._tcp.local (Apple TV) But after the update the service it runs on is now _raop._tcp.local (AirTunes).

The solution to this problem if you are running a Cisco WLC with the lates software is to:

1) Add the AirTunes service to the list of services available for mDNS snooping. To do this go to Controller-->mDNS--->general and select AirTunes from the dropdown.

2) Add the AirTunes service to the appropriate mDNS profiles in your controller, in my case I just use the default profile. To do this go to Controller-->mDNS--->Profiles and add the Airtunes service to each profile you may have configured.

This should do the trick for you

HTH

Chris.

Yeah this was posted last month and I think there was also a support doc, but can't find that. Here is an older post also for reference.

Scott,

Thanks for the link to the older post. I tried to find something like that before I posted but for some reason coul not. I too went through this same situation and just figured I would try to add something to the Supoport Community. I will convert this post into a document if that helps, otherwise i can just delete it since yours came before mine. Thanks.

Chris.

Chris:

Thanks for your post.

I suggest that you convert this discussion to a document. Documents are intending to 'teach' others about something you want to share with them.

As a documnet, I can rate your post. But now as a discussion I am not able to.

Regards,

Amjad

As per your query i can suggest you the following-

1) Add the AirTunes service to the list of services available for mDNS snooping. To do this go to Controller-->mDNS--->general and select AirTunes from the dropdown.

Flexconnect (previously known as HREAP) does fix the bonjour mdns for remote branch offices and other vlan's where you want bonjour to be running.

You only have to flexconnect the wired and wireless WLAN SSID where you need it as the rest of the SSID's can be centrally switched WLAN"s and they work quite nicely.

2) Add the AirTunes service to the appropriate mDNS profiles in your controller, in my case I just use the default profile. To do this go to Controller-->mDNS--->Profiles and add the Airtunes service to each profile you may have configured

The problem with AirPlay is that it depends exclusively on multicast DNS (shortened as mDNS) with DNS service discovery (DNS-SD) to operate. mDNS is a zero configuration protocol that relies on link-local multicast messages on the local LAN to publish DNS records without the need for a centralized DNS server. DNS-SD is a protocol that compliments mDNS and provides service discovery, too. Apple's implementation of mDNS/DNS-SD is called Bonjour.

Aerohive indicates that these Bonjour gateways can also filter mDNS messages, which sounds somewhat useful
