LAP1142N-E-K9 does not join WLC 4402

Hello Cisco-experts,

we would like to deploy several Cisco LAP1142N, but the brandnew devices do not joint the WLC.

The WLC is a 4402 SW-Version 6.0.202.0

The LAP is showing 12.4(23c)JA2   flash:/c1140-k9w8-mx.124-23c.JA2/c1140-k9w8-mx.124-23c.JA2

We use DNS Cisco-capwap-controller.domain name to point the AP to the WLC.

The IP-address assigned is on a different IP-subnet and VLAN:  DHCP address 163.157.68.93, mask 255.255.255.0

Please see attached Log-file from the WLAN-AP.

There are several error-messages like the following in the Log-File of the AP:

status of voice_diag_test from WLC is false

*Mar  1 00:15:32.386: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Invalid event 29 & state 4 combination.

*Mar  1 00:15:32.386: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: SM handler: Failed to process timer message.

*Mar  1 00:15:32.386: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Failed to handle timer message.

*Mar  1 00:15:32.386: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Failed to process timer message.

*Mar  1 00:15:32.386: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Discovery interval timer expiry handler failed.

%MESH-6-CAPWAP_RESTART: Mesh Capwap re-started

The controller is also complaining about  NTP, messages are looged like:

%SNTP-4-PKT-REJECTED: sntp_main.c:452 Spurious.NTP rejected on socket 0

Please check the atttached full log-file of the starting AP also.

P.S.

We have ordered apparently a wrong image for the AP:

SWLAP1140-MESH-K9 Enterprise Wireless Mesh AP1140 Controller based SW image

The WLC is not running a socalled MESH-image.

Thank You in advance

Winfried

when an ap is in mesh mode, it's mac address Ned's to be in the Macfilter of the WLC to be able to join.

Please try adding the Ethernet Mac of the ap to the Macfilter on the WLC and see if it joins. If it does you'll be able to change the mode to local, and remove the Macfilter.

Hello Stephen,

thank You very much. YOur hint was very helpful and saved the problem.

Due to the fact that we have around 50 APs of this type and image in the pipeline,

Your information saved us a lot of time and money.

Instead I tried also successfully to use the Mode-Button during Power-cycling.

Which also helped, but would mean that we need to visit every installed AP

to carry out this procedure.

How can I rate Your good answer by the way ?

Hi,

Thank you very much, this is the best answer !! .

I finally found your answer after unsuccessfully trying to join a 2602E to a 5508. In the past these joined automagically. The batch I'm dealing with now apparently shipped with AP role: MeshAP. And of course, there's no command in CLI to switch that on the AP.

Thank you very much!
