Mobility Express: How to force clients to associate to specific APs

Hi. We have an isolated network consisting of two 1850 APs connected to a switch. Both APs are ME-capable, one of them is running ME. IP and MAC addresses of all clients are known, and all IP addresses are in the same subnet. Is there a way to force all clients to associate to the same AP each time, e.g. client01 - client10 to AP1, and client11 - client20 to AP2?

E.g. if we make two SSIDs, is there a way to limit specific SSID to specific AP (other than have them both act as MEs with different configs)? Or, is there a way to limit specific MAC to specific AP? Thanks and best regards.

A lot of people as this question and the answer is always the same: The wireless client makes the final decision which AP to join.
If the wireless client is loaded with an old firmware it will choose the AP with the worst RSSI.

You can "influence" the wireless client to pick the AP closest to the wireless client:

  • Update the wireless NIC driver of the wireless client
  • Intel-based wireless NIC have a feature called Roaming Aggressiveness & the default value is "2".  Crank this up to "3" or "4" can make a huge difference.
  • Disable the low-speed data rates, from 1- to 11 Mbps, make 12-, 24- and 48 Mbps as Mandatory and the rest as Supported.
