Monitoring Traffic and email notification

Hi All,

We are using WLC 5508, Version 8.1.

I identified Bit torrent and FTP traffic outbound from an Guest-Wifi
network & lots of video streaming.

Is there any way to monitor the bandwidth & if we can get any email alert for the same by setting threshold.

Regards,
Deepak

HI,

There is no such option in WLC however to see the traffic and data rate real time you can use the some other third party applications like cacti, solarwind etc they are very efficient tools which can tell you how much traffic has been segregated over your WLC port.

for email notification you can use the Cisco Prime Infrastructure NMS which is best tool to receives notification and alerts also you can see the WLC port traffic on Cisco Prime

The WLC doesn’t have any functions to send an email and or set thresholds for application use. AVC is what is used on the WLC to determine traffic type and the WLC can send netflow information to a collector. This is what you would need in order to determine bandwidth and possible send you an alert. You would be able to see traffic also from your guest if you router supports netflow and you have a netflow collector. If this traffic is not allowed, why not block it from the router side. If you want to try to block these applications, you can use an AVC Profile. You can find more info on AVC here:

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your help.

Client is looking for more of monitoring, they want to block the user after monitoring it.

Regards,

Deepak

Well they would need another management system to do that. The controller will not be able to send emails.
