Recommendation for WLC Client Roaming Settings

I have a 2504 WLC running v8.0.121.0

With about 12 AIR-LAP1142N-A-K9 on v8.0.121.0

We use WPA2+PSK with AES and all that works fine.

We are experiencing some issue with roaming.  Users report having to reboot there systems (because they do not know what else to do) in order to get reconnected.

I am hoping for some guidance with the Client Roaming settings and any other things we can recommend.

Thanks, in advance.

Make sure 802.11k, 802.11r and 802.11v are enabled.

It may be possible you have one problem access point, and that when users connect to it they fail.  Try verifying that you can connect to each access point, and that it works.

I am not familiar with 802.11k, 802.11r and 802.11v but I have verified all AP's in the area in question are up and reported good in the controller

Follow the best practices design guide.

You didn't quite do what I said.  You need to actually connect to each access point and verify you have connectivity.  Checking that the controller says that each AP has connectivity is not sufficient.

Upgrade the firmware first to, at least, 8.0.133.0.  8.0.121.0 is extremely buggy.

Thanks.  I am on that version at the recommendation of Cisco TAC but will upgrade on your advice.

AireOS 8.0

For AireOS 8.0 customers, TAC recommends 8.0.133.0 (latest CCO release AKA 8.0MR3).

  • The earlier 8.0 CCO releases 8.0.100.0, 8.0.110.0, 8.0.115.0, and 8.0.120.0 are susceptible to the critical Security Advisory cisco-sa-20160113-wlc.
  • Specifically, customers who need 802.11r/11k support for Apple iOS clients, or who use PMIPv6 or RX-SOP, should use 8.0.133.0 in preference to earlier releases.
