I am trying to reset a Cisco Air Cap 1552 E access point back to it's factory defaults. I have tried every mode button press and release from what I read online, but nothing is working. I do not have an option to reset it via a controller. Can someone suggest what is the right way to do this. Thanks in advance.

@coolbreeze Thanks for the thorough reset instructions and will try this and let you and other members that have assisted know the outcome.

Hmm I wrote up the entire process with examples and it seems to have disappeared after posting successfully, did you get an email on it? Would be a pita to write it up again lol
EDIT: Looks like it's just being slow and there might be two posts on it now

@coolbreeze - Would that be an email to my email associated with my Cisco account, or is the email in my account on this forum. Where should I expect to see this email. I have not received anything, but not sure I am looking in the right area for this email. Thanks for taking the time to help me here.

Disregard that, you aren't looking for an email - I posted the process and instructions of the reset for what you need on this thread. Not sure how else to make it more straight forward.
If that still fails, maybe a video like @MHM Cisco World suggested below could help identify what's the struggle.

For a better understanding of WLC discovery and option 43 take a look at these docs:

Unfortunately the factory reset is just not working. Will have to try to get it connected to WLC. If I flashed another lightweight image to this access point, would that set the device where I could log in with default credentials?
09-13-2025 02:18 AM
NO!
You would need to be able to login (or factory reset) to be able to download the software.
However a new software image version alone will not change the config though anyway.
If you can't do the factory default reset using the mode button (button could be faulty or you just aren't pressing it properly) then resetting via WLC will be your only option.

Thanks Rich for the reply! So sounds like this AP will have to join a WLC. Can you give me the few different options how this can happen or steer me to another post, link that goes over this.

Unfortunately, I don't think I am going to be able to connect this to our WLC. It looks like I will have to return the Access Point and get one that has been reset. Thanks for everyone for your and assistance on this.

Try the following:
- Add the AP MAC address to the WLC MAC Filter list on Security settings.
- Play changing the WLC configured year if a "DTLS-3-HANDSHAKE_FAILURE" appears on the WLC log for that AP.
I've just solved the same AP join issue. AP model AIR-CAP1552E-N-K9. WLC model AIR-CTVM
