Resetting a Cisco Air Cap 1552E access point to factory defaults!

Cap-24

Level 1

I am trying to reset a Cisco Air Cap 1552 E access point back to it's factory defaults.  I have tried every mode button press and release from what I read online, but nothing is working.  I do not have an option to reset it via a controller.  Can someone suggest what is the right way to do this.  Thanks in advance.

@coolbreeze Thanks for the thorough reset instructions and will try this and let you and other members that have assisted know the outcome.

Hmm I wrote up the entire process with examples and it seems to have disappeared after posting successfully, did you get an email on it?  Would be a pita to write it up again lol

EDIT: Looks like it's just being slow and there might be two posts on it now   hope it helps, if that works remember to mark whatever worked for your solution with the dropdown at the top right of the relevant post

@coolbreeze  -  Would that be an email to my email associated with my Cisco account, or is the email in my account on this forum. Where should I expect to see this email.  I have not received anything, but not sure I am looking in the right area for this email.  Thanks for taking the time to help me here.

Disregard that, you aren't looking for an email - I posted the process and instructions of the reset for what you need on this thread.  Not sure how else to make it more straight forward.

If that still fails, maybe a video like @MHM Cisco World suggested below could help identify what's the struggle.

For a better understanding of WLC discovery and option 43 take a look at these docs:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless/5500-series-wireless-controllers/119286-lap-notjoin-wlc-tshoot.html

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wireless-lan-wlan/97066-dhcp-option-43-00.html

Trying commenting this again…..try this and see if it works for you.

  1. Disconnect the switch from the AP/PoE injector
  2. Disconnect power from the PoE injector
  3. Connect the AP to the unplugged PoE injector, and press and hold the mode button, make sure you don’t slip off during the boot process.
  4. Connect the PoE injector to the wall power, continue pressing mode button
  5. Wait until the counter reaches 21 to 30 seconds and release the mode button
  6. It should display it is going to do a full factory reset
  7. Once the reset finishes, you’ll see it scanning channels and attempting CAPWAP discovery process
  8. Press Return for Username prompt, and login with username and password default credentials cisco, Cisco (lower case username, uppercase pw)
  9. Type en for enable mode and password is default Cisco (uppercase)
  10.  You should now be able to configure the AP in putty

1) DISCONNECT AP/INJECTOR FROM SWITCH.  CONNECT AP TO POE INJECTOR ONLY
2) PRESS AND HOLD MODE BUTTON AND THEN ALSO CONNECT POWER TO WALL ON INJECTOR (CONTINUE PRESSING MODE BUTTON)

Button is pressed. Configuration reset activated..

Keep the button pressed for > 20 seconds for full factory reset

Wait for the button to be released ....

Button pressed for  24 seconds (this will count, continue pressing mode button since power on until this shows 21 seconds then release)

Performing full factory reset..

Unfortunately the factory reset is just not working.  Will have to try to get it connected to WLC.  If I flashed another lightweight image to this access point, would that set the device where I could log in with default credentials?

NO!
You would need to be able to login (or factory reset) to be able to download the software.
However a new software image version alone will not change the config though anyway.
If you can't do the factory default reset using the mode button (button could be faulty or you just aren't pressing it properly) then resetting via WLC will be your only option.

Thanks Rich for the reply! So sounds like this AP will have to join a WLC.  Can you give me the few different options how this can happen or steer me to another post, link that goes over this.

Can you share short video how you try press button for reset

Maybe you do something wrong

Thanks

Unfortunately, I don't think I am going to be able to connect this to our WLC.  It looks like I will have to return the Access Point and get one that has been reset.  Thanks for everyone for your and assistance on this.

Try the following:

- Add the AP MAC address to the WLC MAC Filter list on Security settings.

- Play changing the WLC configured year if a "DTLS-3-HANDSHAKE_FAILURE" appears on the WLC log for that AP.

I've just solved the same AP join issue. AP model AIR-CAP1552E-N-K9. WLC model AIR-CTVM

Please, share your results.
