satellite broadband & WLANs

I am currently involved in a project linking satellite broadband & a WLAN. Both parts work independently but do not talk to each other. Do I need a switch between the satellite decoder and the access point?

What is the output of the satalite modem ?? Most are serrial V.35

The output of the WLAN is ethernet

If the sat modem output is ethernet then you can either use a cross over cable or a switch

If it is serrial then you will need a router and route between sat network and the WLAN

Even if the sat modem output was ethernet I still would use a router to break up the broadcast domains and to give a determinstic control over what data goes onto the sat which is normally expensive

The output from the sat modem is ethernet. I've tried crossover and also a patch cable. Both cables were tested and checked out ok. The modem will only support about 4 hosts. It worked fine with a crossover cable from the ethernet port to the network port on my laptop, hardwire solution.

Connect the satmodem to a router.

Then you will not be limited by the satmodem 4 macaddress limit.
