Is the AP running autonomous IOS or controller-based IOS?

If the AP in controller-based IOS, then the WLC dictates what firmware the built-in AP will run.  You upgrade the firmware of the controller and the controller will upgrade the IOS of the built-in AP.

If the AP is running autonomous IOS, there are several methods of doing this and this is entirely dependent on how you set up your network.

The easiest method is to do the following steps:

1.  Download the IOS file from the Cisco website.  Make sure you download the TAR file.

2.  Compare the MD5 hash value of the file you've downloaded against the MD5 hash value found in the Cisco website.  They need to match.  If they don't match, don't proceed any further and download the file again.

3.  Remote into the AP.

4.  Use the automated command of "archive download-sw tftp://<TFTP IP address>/filename.tar".  This automated script will unpack the IOS into your AP, change the boot string, leave the old IOS behind.

5.  Once the entire process is complete, you can reboot the AP independently.

Hope this helps.
