WDS requirements

Hello

We've some Cisco 1100 and 1200 Accesspoints and heard about the Wireless Domain Services.

We'd like to use this Service to reduce the roaming-time. I already read the configuration guide but there's something i didn't understand.

Do i have to install a radius-server into the network to use the WDS or does it also work without

We just want to reduce the roaming-time. The increase of security is not important for us.

Thanks

Daniel

The feature you mentioned is called fast secured roaming. You do not need an external radius server. (you can use one though). You can use the local radius server built into IOS based APs.

The most sticky part is the wireless clients. You need CCKM for fast secured roaming. CCKM requires LEAP or EAP-FAST as authentication. All wireless clients are either Cisco, CCXv2 complaint (for LEAP + CCKM), or CCX v3 complaint (for EAP-FAST + CCKM). For CCX complaint clients, please go to the following URL:

Out of my curiosity, what is the current roaming time? What application is required a faster roaming time? Based on my experience, you only need fast secured roaming if you use IP voice, Citrix, or some SQL application.

Thank you for the answer.

That's i wanted to know.

So a radius server is needed, but no external if we have an IOS based AP with integrated radius server.

We have a customer that is using hand-held scanners and the integrated antennas are scanning very slow so we thought about reducing the roaming time.

The application that is running is telnet. Ok, not very critical, but the custumor would be glad about faster roaming times...

But first we have to test this feature.

So once again, thanks for replying!

Please make sure that the scanner support CCKM and fast secured roaming. Most scanners do not support CCKM.
