IOS XR Release 5.3.4 for ASR9000 and CRS

[toc:faq]

IOS XR Release 5.3.4 Introduction

IOS XR release 5.3.4 is a supplemental Extended Maintenance Release for the ASR9000 and CRS platforms. The previous EMR 5.3.3 maintains the EMR status. IOS XR release 5.3.4 is the Cisco suggested software release for all ASR9000 and CRS deployments.

The driver for XR release 5.3.4 was to provide a leaner 5.3.x SW package for the older generation of ASR9000 and CRS cards because beyond XR release 5.3.x these older generation cards are not supported. The end goal is much more than that: XR release 5.3.4 enhances the quality of 5.3.3 release by:

  • Hardening target areas:
    • A9K-VSM-500 infrastructure
    • BNG:
      • special attention to PWHE and Satellite as subscriber access interfaces
      • Geo-Redundancy
    • FPD
    • EnvMon on ASR9K
    • Infrastructure hardening on CRS
  • Integrating selected SW fixes:
    • Released 5.3.x Production SMUs
    • Selected customer found SW defects (bug scrub, early trial, 5.3.x deployments)
    • fixes for SW bugs found during 5.3.4 test cycle

XR Release 5.3.4 Content and Delivery

Feature content of XR release 5.3.4 is identical to 5.3.3.

Early Trial

Early trial is closed with the posting of the release.

Hi,

I have used it once and it was working fine. Just give it a try.

So it will work ? as per the combination above ? I will try it

But what confused me is how Cisco sent a notification that the 5.3.4 install kit is available and it's not

It was definitely available at some point, I downloaded asr9k-ism-cgv6-install-kit.5.3.4.00.sh from software.cisco.com soon after it was made available.  It seems to have been removed from the site since then.

I guess ISM is no longer officially supported on 5.3.4 although I am sure a previous version of this discussion mentioned that 5.3.4 would be the last supported version for ISM (as well as Trident cards)

Hi Martin

Thanks for the reply

I have downloaded the 5.3.4 software with 5.3.3 install-kit and seems it's working fine till the moment :)

I was checking the software and I found 6.1.2 is available (which I was waiting for as I have QSFP-40G-ER4 which is supported on this software release)

I am searching for the release notes but could not find it , can anyone share it? and is there anything new/special in the installation or it's the usual procedure?

Thanks in advance

BR,

Mohammad

hi Mohammad,

we don't claim support for the combination of 5.3.4 IOS XR image and 5.3.3 ISM install kit. Please reach out to your account team at Cisco. There's an interesting programme for migrating ISM to VSM. VSM will bring you many benefits and also a much longer support cycle.

Release 6.1.2 was posted yesterday. The Release Notes will follow this week.

hope this helps,

/Aleksandar

I can confirm that ISM install kit 5.3.3 is working fine on IOS-XR 5.3.4.

Nevertheless, an upgrade to VSM-500 is the only option to be safe.

Hi Aleksandar

Yes I know , I just wanted to migrate to the recommended release :)

I already have two VSMs and the customer wants to utilize the ISM as well

Thanks for the information

As the 6.1.2 release was posted on Cisco website , I can download it and install it without issues right?

hi Mohammad,

yes, all releases that we post to software download portal on cisco.com can be used. Our suggestion for general deployment is always the latest EMR (at this point 5.3.4), but you are free to use any other release. The EMR 6.1.3 will be available in about 3 months from now.

/Aleksandar

Hi Aleksandar

Hope this finds you well

I can see that the release notes is available now :

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/asr9000/software/asr9k_r6-1/general/release/notes/b-release-note-asr9k-612.html#id_34254

But there is something I want to make sure of please

In the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Line Cards table , i can see under the VSM on version 6.1.2 is not supported , what does that really means?

It is not supported for the 64 bit version, you need to use the 32 bite version.

Hi Aleksandar

I tried on two different ASR9K to install add the 6.1.2 mini package

Mohammad

Hi,

Please check the connectivity to the ftp server. If everythings is ok then you also try to copy the pkg to the routers disk, like it was suggested in the logs.

Hi

I have downloaded the 5.3.4 PIE files

I have reserved the necessary space , what I have faced when issuing the command admin install add ftp://x.x.x.x/mini (FTP tested and worked with another PIE files) is that I was prompted with the message pie file corrupted when reaching 49% each time!

BR,

Mohammad

Hi,

please check the hash of the pie and compare it. Use this tool if you are using Win OS.

One tip for you. Always install first then activate later.

Install add ftp://xxxx. After the installation is done for all packages do this

install activate disk0:"mini" disk0:"fpd" disk0:"mcast" test.

If you don't get any errors you can try without "test" at the end of the command.

Hi Smail

Thanks for your mail , I have used the tool and it gives me matched

The error I got is when I was trying to add before install that what confused me , I will try again and update

Thanks again

BR,

Mohammad
