I want to upgrade ASR 9001 IOS XR 4.2.3 to 6.5.3. What will be the procedure to upgrade and also can I directly go to this version or any interim image is required in between?

0. You could directly go to 6.x.x from 4.x.x, but it would be through TURBOBOOT, which means disk will be wiped out, procedure can be found here, https://community.cisco.com/t5/service-providers-documents/asr9000-xr-understanding-turboboot-and-initial-system-bring-up/ta-p/3146024.
1. You can upgrade from 4.x.x to 6.5.3, but you need to go through an upgrade path which is specified in the 6.5.3 MOP
You can find the MOP file under your software.cisco.com page for the particular XR version you want to install.
Do not forget to install the certificates. ; )

Thanks a lot, I will check further because it is in production and critical. I need to check if hardware also support the newer version.

You can't go directly, but if you upgrade to 5.3.x first then you can upgrade, otherwise you need to turboboot.
