I might be looking in all the wrong places for the answer for this. And haven’t really found the correct answer from my findings.

Is the following switch a layer 3 or layer 2 with some layer 3 functionality?

Cisco WS-C2960C-8PC-L 8 Port Fast Ethernet POE

Any help would be appreciated!

It is L2 Managable switch.....

  • Total Number of Network Ports: 8
  • Number of PoE (RJ-45) Ports: 8
  • Ethernet Technology: Gigabit Ethernet
  • Network Technology: 10/100Base-TX
  • Number of Total Expansion Slots: 2
  • Expansion Slot Type: SFP
  • Layer Supported: 2
  • Manageable: Yes
  • Standard Memory: 128 MB
  • PoE (RJ-45) Port: Yes
  • Input Voltage: 220 V AC, 110 V AC

In the same series...Cisco Catalyst 2960-C  compact siwtch models supports Layer-3....but yours is Cisco WS-C2960C which supports only Layer-2.

Hello @kazenmussa,

By default it is a L2 switch.

But, the SDM templates allow you to configure the system resources of the 2960 switch. This makes it possible to optimize the characteristics of the switch depending on how it is used in the network. For example, the default template allows you to balance the switch resources. It is possible to modify the SDM configuration and define the lanbase-routing template. This allows you to optimize the system resources of the switch to perform static routing and create up to 255 VLAN interfaces. Using this model gives you the “right” to use commands generally reserved for the level 3 router and switch.

Switch(config)#sdm prefer lanbase-routing

You need to reload !

Best regards

The LAN Base feature set offers enhanced intelligent services that include comprehensive Layer 2 features. The IP Base feature set provides baseline enterprise services in addition to all LAN Base features. IP Base also includes the support for routed access, MACsec, and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF).

those are L2 switches; if u looking for used one; don't get this one; get L3 switch like c3750s (most favorite) or c3650 or c3850 (more $); you can turn off ip routing on any layer 2 switch to get only l2 functionality;  i have seen c3750s switches running for 7 years non-stop! no reboot, no failures.
