This document is intended to guide users to learn more about IPv6 deployment in Voice Over IP Network. This document covers the IPv6 functionality & features on Cisco UC Networks and deployment examples.

IPv6 Innovations in CUCM

With the system release of CUCM 7.1 Cisco systems has introduced IPv6 functionality to a range of UC products. Today Cisco Introduces, Voice Over IPv6 ( VoIPv6) feature includes IPv4 and IPv6 dual stack support on voice gateways and MTP, IPv6 support for SIP trunks, and Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP)-controlled analog gateways. The primary focus of this document is on new IPv6 functionality for Cisco UC networks.

Cisco Recommendations

  • Cisco recommend that IPv6 UC deployments be configured with a dual stack mode.
  • To maximize IPv6 traffic in the UC network, capable Phones, SIP Gateways and SIP should be configured to support IPv6 signaling and IPv6 media

IPv6 - UC Features

1. IPv6 on Cisco Unified Communications Manager

IPv6 - CUCM Phone Signaling and Media Options

CUCM Device configuration to enable IP addressing Mode - IPv4 & IPv6

Goto Device > Device Settings > Common Device Profile

  • IPv4/ IPv6 Media Addressing options and SLAAC configurable on a per device/ device profile basis

IPv6 - CUCM Addressing

CUCM can support :

• One Link Local Address
• One Unique Local Address or
• One Global Address
• ( and an IPv4 address )

IPv6 - CUCM System Configuration

  • Phone - Enterprise Paramater configuration

Goto System > Enterprise Parameters

  • CUCM - Phone Addressing Mode Configuration

Goto Device > Device Settings > Common Device Profile

2. IPv6 on CUCM SIP Gateways & Trunks

IPv6 - CUCM SIP Gateways & Trunks Signaling and Media Options

CUCM SIP Gateway Device configuration to enable IP addressing Mode - IPv4 & IPv6

  • IPv4/ IPv6 Media Addressing options configurable on a per device/ device profile basis

IPv6 - SIP Gateways & Trunks - ANAT

IPv6 SIP Gateways & Trunks - ANAT (Alternative Network Address Type) with SIP Profile and Device configuration

IPv6 - CUCM SIP Trunk Configuration

3. IPv6 support on VG224 & ISR SCCP Analogue ports

4. IPv6 - UC & Security

RFC “mandates” privacy and encryption using IPSec

•For UC environments SRTP is used as SRTP is specifically crafted for UDP based RTP traffic and has a lower packet overhead.

•CUCM uses TLS and SRTP - No key exchange required as keys are distributed by CUCM

•IPv4 <-->IPv6 MTPs transparently pass SRTP streams

•Phones use built in MIC

5. IPv6 - CUCM Dual Stack Deployment

Figure shows the IPv4 & IPv6 supporting devices on CUCM Dual stack deployment

Figure shows the IPv4 & IPv6 supporting Applications on CUCM Dual stack deployment

•For Dual Stack deployments MTPs are not required as CUCM will select the common addressing type for media i.e. IPv4

•Except for dual stack devices that are forced (via Common Device Configuration setting) to use IPv6 for Media – in which case an MTP is required

Jay Shah

Thank you for providing detail IPv6 deployment information.

The following new components will also support dual stack for CUCM 8.6.x or higher:

     • IP phones SCCP: 6901/6911 /6921/6941/6945/6961

     • Cisco Unity Connection using SCCP or SIP trunk IPv6 Interface
