SIP Inbound and Outbound No audio and Ringback

EricN

Level 1

Hello everdyone!  Running into a weird one!  We setup a new SIP trunk and it's registered and up.  When testing, for either inbound or outbound, the call seems to work, but we get no audio.  I setup the test extension on my Jabber, and when I place a call, I don't hear ringback but the phone on the other end will ring.  Once picked up, it sounds like it establishes but no audio at all.  Then after a certain amount of time, the call drops and it fails.  I've attached the debugs.  I'm not sure if it's like a codec issue or it's sending the provider something the provider doesn't like.  I do see a 401 unauthorized coming from the carrier as well

Hi,

What solution you are using for your call control? CUCM, CME?

Whats is your call flow?

Did you checked with the ITSP the supported configurations for the SIP TRUNK? Authentication, ports, codecs....

CUCM.  They sent us SIP trunk info with username, password, IP.  I set it up in SIP-UA, and configured the trunk on CUCM which is registered and up.  I place inbound and outbound which seems to "work" but no audio then it drops.  Wondering if either codec or if RTP is being blocked on the firewall.  Checking that now

Hi,

This is your call flow:

Jabber -> CUCM -> SIP -> CUBE -> FW -> INTERNET -> SIP TRUNK.

As you said you need to check your firewall to see the ports, but be carefull with this deployment. A SIP port openned in your firewall could be exploited.

@EricN
First, 401 unauthorized message is not an issue. The ITSP challenges your CUBE for the Digest Authentication username and password every time it initiates a SIP session with the ITSP.

Second, Your CUCM does not send a PRACK (Provisional Acknowledgement) is response to the CUBE's 183 Session Progress message. This is why you hear no ring back tone, and possibly why the call eventually drops. To fix this issue, follow the steps below.

In CUCM, go to Device > Device Settings > SIP Profile
Find and open the SIP Profile associated with your SIP trunk
From the SIP REL1XX Options* dropdown list, select "Send PRACK for all 1xx Messages"
Save the changes, then reset your SIP Trunk
Test your calls again and you should hear the ring back tone, but I doubt this would fix the no audio issue.

Third, for the no audio issue, there could be a lot of different reasons.
Once the call connects, from your Jabber, do a Shift+Ctrl+S and see if Jabber is sending and receiving RTP packets.
If there is a firewall involved, make sure it is not blocking RTP traffic (UDP ports 16384 to 32767)
Disable VAD under each dial peer by running the "no vad" command
Check your bind source-interface commands
Do packet captures on the CUBE and on the phone side

Your SIP logs show the call connects with g711ulaw ptime=20 and 101 for DTMF on both sides so I don't see any issues there.

Thanks!  Unfortunately it didn't work for the ringback   We did a packet capture and we found something odd.  The audio doesn't get picked up by Jabber.  I can hear the audio when talking on my cell or deskphone when testing, but when I talk through Jabber, audio doesn't get picked up.  Looking into Firewall still as I think that is the issue.

Your Jabber audio issue is most likely due to firewall blocking RTP traffic so continue to investigate that.

As for the ring back tone, do you hear it when you test with a desk phone?

If not, please share the output of "debug ccsip messages" for an outbound call again now that you have updated the SIP Profile.

Please see snapshot below, the ladder diagram of your previous logs.
As you can see, carrier send a 183 Session Progress w/SDP. The CUBE resonds with a PRACK.
The CUBE then sends a 183 Session Progress W/SDP to the CUCM, but CUCM does not reply with a PRACK.

Did you apply the change as shown in the screenshot below?
If yes, please double check if you applied the change to the SIP Profile that is used by your SIP Trunk, and make sure you RESET the SIP trunk after the change.

are you doing a SIP cloud? type of intelepeer service?  If so, you will need to NAT 5060.  If this is an internet sip what kind of firewall are you running?

my question is for the original poster.
