Configuring rate-limit

fcatalao

Level 1

My network is as follows.

7206 and 3620 routers connected to a 3524 (port 1 & 24 respectively) using dot1q trunks.

In the 3620 I have configured 2 sub-interfaces (vlan1 and 200).

In the 7206 I have configured 1 sub-interface (vlan 200). And use the interface fe 0/0 for vlan 1.

In 7206 (sub-interface vl200) I have configured:

"rate-limit output 1024000 192000 384000 ..."

and in 3620 (also sub-interface vl200) exactly the same

When I do and extended ping (using vlan 200) from 7206 to 3620 many packets are dropped.

When I do the same (using vlan 1 with rate-limits configured), no packets are dropped.

Can anyone please explain why?

Thanks Fernando

Hello Fernando,

is there any other traffic being transmitted on VLAN 200 ? Can you post the configurations of both routers ?

Regards,

Georg

Hello,

when you say you are using an exended ping, what options do you use regarding the packet size and the interval ? Also, you are rate-limiting your FastEthernet interfaces to 1-2MB, can you try and see what happens when you increase it to let´s say 10MB ?

Can you also post the output of:

show interfaces rate-limit

Regards,

Georg

Hi again,

for the extended ping i use the defaults except for the ping count which i use 1000000.

the rate-limiting value is because we have some clients behind that network that share 1mb.

remember that these settings i have also tested with vlan1 and didn´t have the same problem.

at this time i cannot paste the rate-limiting output because its deactivated in the 7206 and we are doing a input/output rate-limiting in the 3620 on vlan1.

thanks

regards

fernando
