You cannot do it through the console port. Why dont you TFTP it through the network or by connecting your computer to a ethernet interface of the router? Or download it from CCO?

my cisco router is moduel 2504. There are only serial ports , token ring port and the console port. So if would like to update or repair the ios image, what should i do. because of backing-up the ios is a important thing for maintaining for the router

Hi,
1)If you are not able to connect a tftp server via token-ring port, you might use serial back-to-back connection to another router equipped with an Ethernet port.
2) To repair the IOS image, Xmodem via console cable might work.
(2500 is not on the supported devices list, but I hope xmodem command might be working on it).

Why don't you try to install a tftp server at a PC or laptop and download the router's IOS image there?
http://www.winagents.com/downloads/tftpsetup.exe
Cisco IOS cannot be downloaded thru a console port.
only to a flash card or tftp server.
regards.

Cisco IOS cannot be downloaded thru a console port.
only to a flash card or tftp server.
you can then issue the "copy flash tftp" command.
previously, you should have issued the "show flash" command to find out the name of the IOS file.
