I was wondering what's the advantages of being able to configure an IP address on an interface (other than vlan 1). I have a Catalyst 2950T-24 with EI image.

Hi,

defining an IP address on a virtual interface VLANx (different from int VLAN1) changes the management VLAN to VLANx on the switch.

It's a recommended solution (see http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/pd/si/casi/ca6000/prodlit/vlnwp_wp.pdf) from security point of view.

Regards,

Milan

Thanks for your reply. I noticed that you mentioned about defining IP address on a VIRTUAL interface for security reason. Totally agreed with this but I'm after defining IP address on PHYSICAL interfaces (should have mentioned this before) on Catalyst 2950. I don't see any reason for this.
