RV042, 082, 016 with SX300/500 switch open discussion

Hi all, this is an open topic to interopate Cisco small business RV042, RV082 and RV016 in conjunction with the Cisco Small Business SX300 and SX500 switches. Feel free to ask questions in relationship to the RV0XX routers and SX300/500 series switches to optimize your scenario!

Don't forget to check out the small business blog

http://blogs.cisco.com/smallbusiness/

The RV0XX series does not support 802.1q VLAN. To overcome this limitation, we will employee the SX300/500 switch. This topic is also applicable for any other router which does not support 802.1q subinterfaces or VLAN tagging (so long as you know how to operate that router).  In addition, the RV0XX supports only 1 DHCP scope

The dependencies are as follows-

  • Cisco SX300 or SX500 in layer 3 mode
  • RV042, RV082 or RV016 with internet connection

Here is how to configure basic connectivity to make the foundation of your network.

  • Once you have put your switch in to layer 3 mode, change the VLAN 1 IP address to a static IP address, in this case, 192.168.2.254

static_i[_vlan1.JPG

  • Create a second VLAN, in this case, we create VLAN 2 with the name Internet

Create_vlan2.JPG

  • Assign a static IP address to the second VLAN you've created, in this case we will be using 192.168.3.254 on a /24 mask for the VLAN 2

vlan3_ip_address.JPG

  • Assign the switch ports you wish to be a member of the VLAN you created, in this case, I have assigned port 2 to VLAN 2 untagged

  • Enable the DHCP server on the switch

dhcp_server_enable.JPG

  • Create a DHCP pool, in this case, we will be creating the pool to correlate to VLAN 2 on the 192.168.3.x subnet

  • Log in to your RV0XX router and enable multiple subnet

multiple_subnet.JPG

  • Define your multiple subnet, in this example, 192.168.3.0 network with /24 mask

multiple_subnet2.JPG

  • Create a static route to direct traffic to 192.168.3.0 subnet to the VLAN 1 gateway, on this case it is 192.168.2.254

3_0_static.JPG

  • Create a second IP route to direct traffic to the 192.168.2.to the VLAN 2 gateway, on this case it is 192.168.3.254

  • Remember we configured port 2 as VLAN 3 untagged. Move a connection to port 2 and verify you receive a proper DHCP address and confirm the internet works

Tom,

First of all thanks for your efforts, great help.

The system works now internet on all vlans.

last problem was that that the dsn was not given to the pc's

Maybe there is some relay function for that?

Jos

Hi Jos, glad it's working well. The DNS should be fed through the DHCP setting. Can you confirm the DNS option is set to something like 8.8.8.8? It might be interesting to make a lab and test that functionality on the new software. I can't imagine DNS not working through DHCP assignment. If you're assigning static IP address, make sure to double check the NIC adapter settings.

Tom,

Dont know what happend, but i can log in to the sg300-10 via telnet but no connect via http or https.

You see this befor?

Jos

Hi Jos, I have not seen this functionality disappear on its own before. I suspect somehow the http/s service was turned off.

Please log in to the CLI and issue commands

config t

ip http server

Once this command is issued, try to log in over http on your web browser. If this does not work, I think we need to open a case with Cisco for further investigation.

In addition, have you rebooted the switch at all lately? Perform command "wr mem" then reboot the switch to see if it free up the web GUI

Hi Tom,

I have tryed to execute comm. in the cli

He does not respond and or recognise commands.

i think there is a bug,or the install was not correct of the new software

Butt the system runs for now and has internet, only no management

The strange thing is that i have a seccond 1 so i thought to day to program that one.

During setup it rebooted it self and i could not enter the sg300 again.

When looking at it one would suspect software faults, would you?

cheers,

Jos

Hi Jos, I'm with you, it seems like overlap software install or something weird. I've not run in to management issues or odd locking up yet.

Tom,

Think problem solved.

Did the boot/firmware install again on the second unit.

Than programmed it according your walk through/help.

Works perfect now,did reboot and hard reset.

System up and running, and and accessebel by gui and telnet.

Great help and advise

Many thanks,

Jos

I know this thread is old, but would you be able to update on what the issue you encountered ended up being?  I'm encountering the same issue in the same scenario where I can get to the VLan IP on the SG300, but I can' seem get to the RV042 and onto the internet.

Thanks,
