Core issue

This issue is due to the presence of Cisco bug ID CSCse99322.

Oracle listener saves its logs to the listener.log file. When this issue occurs, the listener stops once the file reaches the operating system limit of 2 GB. As a consequence, no new Oracle connections can be established, and the Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis, and Response System (CS-MARS) loses some of its functionality.

For example, the webpage comes up without icons or banners. There is just a username and password prompt in the upper left hand corner and an error message in the browser.

Or, at times the device can be accessed through Secure Shell (SSH), but most of the commands produce errors. These are some of the commands that produce errors:

These are the results from the pnstatus command:

[pnadmin]$ pnstatus
Program aborted due to: ORA-12541: TNS:no listener

[pnadmin]$ pnstatus
Program aborted due to: ORA-12541: TNS:no listener

In order to verify that this condition is not transient, retry the pnstatus command every 30 seconds for a few minutes. If the error persists, there is a high probability that this bug is the problem.

This issue occurs in these CS-MARS versions:

  • 4.1(5)

  • 4.2(1)

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue in version 4.2(1), install the csmars-4.2.1-patch.pkg patch.

Otherwise, upgrade to version 4.2(2), which is available at Cisco Downloads.
