Hi

By default the MTU (Maximum Transfer Unit) is 1500 bytes, in order to make more reliable or efficiency the transfer of the data, is used packet switching. The packet switching is a method to divide the data in small parts called packets, this packets are sent by a source once the packets are received by the destination the data is reassembled. Each packet has information into the header about the source and the destination and payload. This method is useful to handle the data, in some case you need to transfer a lot of traffic and you can modify (if it is supported) the MTU to allow more traffic and avoid congestion.

Hope it is useful
