Hey Guys,

This is my first post on here, and hopefully I have a quick question.

I currently have a 2821 Router acting only as a NAT device.  I'd like to put a little more use into it and thought that maybe I could start learning about VOIP.  And now I'm just curious as to what all I would need to start out.  My 2821 is currently running the latest IOS adventerprise.151-4.M10.

Essentially, I would just like to set up a few phones around the house with the ability to communicate with each other - but I am not clear on the modules I need for my 2821, which phones I should get or if I need any additional software on my router.

    Optional support for Cisco CallManager Express (Cisco CME) for local call processing in stand alone business for up to 48 IP Phones
    Optional support for Survivable Remote Site Telephony support for local call processing in small enterprise branch offices for up to 48 IP phones.

A 2821 is more than enough to get started if you just want to dabble.  Get an FXS card for the 2821 and configure CME which should be part of your IOS.  From there, you could get a switch module installed but would need power bricks for the VoIP phones unless you went with a 3560 Power inline switch.  The FXS ports on the router would let you plug in an analog line and make calls to your VoIP handsets once configured correctly.  If you really wanted to go all out, you could buy two T1 VWIC cards and interconnect them with a T1 crossover cable just to see the ports come up.  Finally, you are going to need some DSPs.  A PVDM2-8 or PVDM2-16 should do just fine for one or two calls but don't expect to be able to run a full lab on those alone.

I've got a 3750 POE that'll be powering the phone and just acquired a couple of 7961G.  I'm really only looking to have the phones in my house, and not connect them to any outside line (mostly because I don't actually have a land line) - this is really so my wife can call me while I'm in my downstairs man-cave, lol.

 I have a PVDM2-16 on the way.  Do I still need to get the T1 VWICS or FXS/FXO cards?

If you are doing pure G.711 across the board with no kind of outside calling and using the phone as a means for around the house, no you don't need any of those.

Hi,

Since you have a 3750 on the way, best way to learn VOIP would be to get yourself VMware version 11, cucm version 10.5 and a nic.

Install VMware on your pc, in VMware install cucm and configure, get your phones registered onto cucm and maybe at a later stage get your router registered as a gateway on in cucm.

As time goes familiarize yourself with applications like CUPS, UCCX and CUAC and install them onto your VMware.
