Copy Rommon files from switch to other one

Hello,

I hope you are well, I have a problem with a new switch Cisco Catalyst 2960x, it does not start, after checking the “Rommon” mode, there are no existing files, now I try to make a test, I want to copy these files from the other switch that works well to the one that is damaged.

Could you tell me how I can do this?

Hello @Monaim,

first of all, you need a TFTP server software installed on your pc like tftp64 and an USB stick with a maximum size of 2GB that is FAT or FAT16 formatted. The 2960x series switches have a USB-A port but they are a bit picky so that you might have to try a few old sticks to find a working one.

Then the steps are as follows:

• Copy the IOS from your working switch onto your pc using "copy flash: tftp:" and follow the prompts.
• Copy the IOS onto your max. 2GB FAT or FAT16 formatted USB stick
• Boot the new switch into rommon mode, insert the USB stick and do a "dir usbflash0:" to verify that it can read the stick.
  The output should display the name and size of the IOS file that you copied, e.g. 'c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E10.bin'.
• If the stick works, boot the switch with the command "boot usbflash0:c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E10.bin".
  In rare cases it might not work the first time, then just repeat this step and it should work.
• After the switch booted the IOS successfully, configure int vlan 1 with an IP address so that you can connect to the switch with the ethernet cable from your pc. verify you can ping the switch successfully.
• Now you can copy the IOS from your pc to the new switch with command "copy usbflash0:c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E10.bin flash:".
• Finally you can set the boot variable with the command "boot system flash:c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E10.bin".

You cannot directly copy the IOS in rommon mode so that you need to boot from USB first and then do the copy after booting the new IOS software. Using USB is much faster but you could also use the very old XMODEM protocol to transfer the IOS from the pc to your switch. However, this can take hours so that it is worth searching for a supported USB stick first.

Hi Jens,

Thank's for your replay, I've followed the steps that you have mentioned, but when I type the commands it's give me this error message:

• switch: copy usbflash0:c2960x-universalk9-mz.152-7.E12.bin flash:

I have check dir flash: it's showing only the ios of the switch :

Why not just download the IOS file from the Cisco website instead of going through all the trouble?

I did, but the switch is not booting, it keep restarting.And i think due missing files the switch couldn't boot.

I am not sure at what point you get stuck now. You said that the faulty switch does not have any files in flash. Now you said that copy from USB failed but there is an IOS file on flash: in your output.

So do you have an USB stick with the IOS file on it?

Could you boot the faulty switch using this USB stick?

Please let us know what you have done so far, which steps worked and where you are now getting problems.

Hi Jens,

After trying to copy IOS from the switch, an error message pops up:

%Error reading flash: c2960x-universalk9-mz. 152-7.E11 (Is a directory)

But I've tried this command and its works: archive upload-sw usbflash0: /<filename.tar>

I think there is issue with USB ports on damage switch, so that's why I'm copying the working ISO using a modem, I'll let you now when it's done.

Re, The IOS is on the switch now, but the switch keeps restarting.

There should be some error message telling you the reason for the reload.

So what output do you get when it keeps restarting?

Nothing, the moments that the fan stopped and the switch try the start it's back to restarting.

Based on that error message there are only a few things you could try:

• Do a cold boot, i.e. unplug the power cable and wait like 30 seconds before plugging it in again
• Try some older IOS software and check whether the switch comes up
• If none of the above helps, it is probably time to RMA the switch

Maybe @Leo Laohoo has some other idea if cold boot or an older IOS version do not help.
