Understand the CE can be configured in transparent mode or proxy mode.

Does client requires DNS in order to work properly for both the two options?

Is DNS required on the CE for both of the two options?

the client does not need dns in proxy mode.

[But only for traffic using the proxy]

The CE always need a DNS server.
