We have about one hundred of these running in production and have had to replace them and usually ship them direct to the remote site. We are currently runiing 4.4.5 and mostly the replacment units come with an older version installed and we have had no problems getting them into the controller and upgrading them at a later time.
Like you said as long as the CM is running the newer version you should be fine.
