RAID Alert

Hi!,

Our Blocker, in use since 2009, recently sent us this alert. No SmartNet on it. I think Disk0 is down.  I've ordered our reseller to fix this but he don't know how to rebuild the RAID and is looking for informations.

So, if someone here can help us to solve our problem, it will be great.

The Warning message is:

A RAID-event has occurred:

RAID ar0: 75683MB <Intel MatrixRAID RAID1> status: DEGRADED RAID ar0: disk0 DOWN no device found for this subdisk RAID disk 0: Maybe 10 RAID disk 1: Maybe 10

Version: 7.1.2-020

Serial Number: 002219D4D4FB-JCRVTH1

Timestamp: 02 Feb 2012 10:43:32 +0100

Thanks in advance for your support.

--- Sorry for my English (sure i've made some mistakes), I'm a French guy with not enough practice ;-) .... ----

Patrice,

Any RAID Event error you should give the Cisco Small Business support center a call ASAP @ 1-866-606-1866 and open a support case.. You will need a valid contract associated with your unit.

I send you the information step by step, how to replace the missing drive and reconfigure the raid.

Step 1 Log in to the console as an Administrator and enter the CLI command, show hardware.

Step 2 Check the status of the logical drives. Perform one of the following:

–If the logical drive status is OK or Optimal, you need not perform any further action.

–If the logical drive status is not OK, check the physical disk status, as described in Step 3.

Step 3 Enter the CLI command, show hardware, again and perform one of the following:

–If none of the physical disks displays the status as "Failed", you need not perform any further action.

–If the logical drive status is not OK or Optimal, and any physical disk is displaying as "Failed", identify the physical disk on the server as follows.

The first disk that appears in the "show hardware" command output denotes the left-most disk. Any subsequent disk in the command output gets iterated as next right disk.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note You must perform step 2 to verify the logical RAID drive status and then perform step 3 to verify the physical disk status.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To replace the failed drive and rebuild the RAID, continue with Step 4.

Step 4 Perform a graceful shut down of the server by using the CLI command utils system shutdown.

Step 5 After the server is shut down, remove the failed disk. Do not replace with the new disk yet.

Step 6 Power up the system.

Step 7 During the system startup you will view a message about degraded and defunct RAID.

Step 8 Accept the default option. This will force RAID to be detected and broken.

Step 9 After the system is up and running, do another graceful shut down of the server by using the CLI command utils system shutdown.

Step 10 After the system is shut down, replace the empty slot on the failed disk with a new disk that is of the same type, of same manufacturer, and of the same size as that of the original disk. For example, Western Digital.

Step 11 Ensure the new replacement disk is inserted all the way in.

Step 12 Power up the system.

Step 13 During the system startup, if you come across a message about RAID, accept the default option and continue with the system startup.

Step 14 After the system is up, log in to the CLI and enter the CLI command show hardware.

In the show hardware command output, in the "Logical Drive" section, the "Current Operation" field will display "Rebuild", and the "Percentage Complete" field will display the percentage complete for RAID rebuild.

The status on the new, replaced hard disk will display "Rebuilding" for the course of rebuilding.

Rebuild will take between 1 to 2 hours to complete. This depends on the size of the disk.

After the failed RAID disk replacement is complete, the status of both the logical drive and the new physical disk will display as "OK" and "Online".

Also I send you the link of the cisco web site where you can find more information about Raid managing,

Thank you

Hi, I've got the same Problem with a Cisco Spam & Virus Box - Version 7.1.3

Tried your stepts to exchange failing hard-drive and rebuild the raid on my site, BUT:

Although I' logged in as admin via IP-Console (192.168.42.42), most of your commands won't work on my box.

show hard - unknown command

and so on

found the COMMAND enable on another help forum to enter a highter level - command ENABLE unknown.

Currently the box is still running on one hard-drive without raid, but I need a functional raid.

Any idea, what I'm doin' wrong?

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Best regards

Conni

All,

I know this thread is old but for future reference if a drive fails and the RAID is degraded you should contact support and create a case. An Advance Replacement RMA will be processed and a replacement Blocker B10 appliance will be shipped to you. You should not attempt to replace the hard drive.
