@hoylandpaul We do have improvements planned for workflow output and we appreciate your feedback. Please use the Give your feedback button at the bottom of any page in the Automation menu options to send requests directly to the product team.
Currently, as a workflow designer, you can define output variables with messages to the workflow user about the operations and status from the workflow. Unfortunately, to view these variables, you will have to be in the view run screen of the workflow. You could add an activity to your workflow to send an email, post to WebEx or Slack, or update a ticket in Jira or ServiceNow with results, or even write the results to a file. 
Another option for right now would be to add an approval task to the very end of your workflow that displays your result message. The workflow user would have to click into the Automation -> User Tasks menu, but you could display a workflow result message there like this example:
