5510 startup and configuration

I have a cisco asa 5510 which I am attempting initial setup.

I have connected it to a cisco SG 100D-08  switch using the 5510's MGMT port.

I have connected a laptop windows XP to the SG 100D-08 as well.

I set the IP address of the laptop:

192.168.1.2

255.255.255.0

gateway: 192.168.1.1

I use internet explorer 8 on this laptop.

https://192.168.1.1/  does indeed communicate with the 5510I leave the login/passwd blank and then Enter

click ok to accept all certificates on their dialog boxes...

I click run ASDM as java applet,

new screen comes up: CISCO Adaptive Security Device Manager,

then java screen: Authetication Required.

again, I leave login and passwd blank, click ok

this releases the java authentication screen and then the

security device manager screen populates with info:

ASDM version 5.0 (8)

ASA version 7.0 (8)

User: <admin>

privelege level 15

Java script enabled

java enabled

Browser Internet Explorer

Browser version 8.0

Java Version 1.6.0_20

OS windows XP 5.1

Do not close this window

Cisco ASDM 5.0 for ASA will start in another window. Closing this browser window will cause Cisco ASDM to exit.

please wait. Main window is coming up

<status bar grows to 100%>

from there, nothing... thatASDM never opens another window and therefore never starts?

what is happening?

...I do not have pop up blocker on... it is turned off.

what else can I check?

also, if i use the:

Download ASDM Launcher and start ASDM

asdm launcher does indeed, download to my computer and runs, but when I  OK

the ip address screen with blank login/passwd,

the login screen disisses and no ASDM manager ever comes up.

What would happen if you reset to factory defaults as per the URL below ? (assuming you can get access to the CLI of the ASA5510)

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa72/configuration/guide/start.html#wp1053876

I would also be inclined to download the latest ADSM and run set it up on your XP machine after you performed the reset to factory defaults as yourlined in the link above.

It's one suggestion, but netpro must have logged a lot of similar enquirees like yours.  Why not also search  NetPro for similar questions posed by other folks, if this procedure doesn't satisfy your needs.

regards Dave

console cable and hyperterminal connect fine....

alyhough I know very little of the command line instructions, I was able to reset to factory defaults:

ciscoasa(config)# confif factory-default 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

runing asdm still does not work. I have downloaded 6.2 ASDM

what next?

I know nothing of netpro?

what is that?

a couple listings from the CLI:

Weird issue. I'm experiencing the same problem with a brand new 5510. I try to connect using the ASDM but after logging into the ASDM the window closes. I tried reinstalling Java with the latest version available at java.com, have reset the device to factory default a few times.

When I launch the HTTPS site it's the same thing. I get prompted for a password then after entering I get a notice saying "please wait... Main window is coming up" and the progress bar goes to 100% without anything else happening. I've left that window open for 30 min now with no change.

I've tried using several browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome) and have now tried with more than one computer as well. I'm getting responses when I PING the interface.

David,

I had the opportunity to use a brand new computer with fresh operating system install...

I used internet explorer 8

and pointed it to the 5510: 192.168.1.1

It gave me an error about no Java runtime installed, so I used the cisco link and installed

Java 2 runtime environment, SE v1.4.2_07

and ASDM worked fine on that computer.

Maybe having the latest Java is not such a good thing?

You beat me to updating this post. I discovered the same thing. I downgraded to 5.12 on my admin machine and that's fine now. I tried a few more computers (I hop around to a lot of machines) and one with 6.2 (I think) was fine. Another with 6.10 (I think) didn't work. Very confusing but I'm glad there's finally something consistent and this workaround is acceptable.

Holy Cow...Thanks guys!! I was beating my head against the wall on this one.  I found an ASA 5510

sitting in the corner here at my new job collecting dust.  So I decided to mount this joker and start using

it, apparently they bought it 2 years before I was hired but the guy before me couldn't figure out how to

configure it.  Any rate I was really getting frustrated that the java app wouldn't load.  I could see the process running but the GUI would just never come up.  I uninstalled Java 6 and rolled back to an older version and BAM! I'm in like Flynn!  Thanks
