Java Problem starting C/Works VMS2.2

I am running Cisco Works VMS 2.2 on a Windows 2000 Professional SP3, with 1GB RAM. I often encounter 1 of 3 different responses whenever I start CWVMS. One, it starts with no problem at all. (by starting I mean, I am able to get to the log on page and log on succesfully). Two, it starts but just at the time I am about to log on it gives an error message indicating that the Java version I have is NOT supported. It asks for 1.4.1.02 and I have 1.4.2.04 running. But it still runs anyway. The only problem I encounter is when I want to use it to manage PIX, then it would just keep giving the "non-Java evrsio support" error message. The third and last response I could get is when I attempt to launch CWVMS (Start/Programs/CiscoWorks) and the browser just continue the

web site found. waiting for reply" message forever. I mean, it could stay in that state for hours but I would not be able to get to http://localhost:1741.

I have done everything imaginable including uninstalling Java 1.4.1 and 1.4.2 and checking my services to see what is running etc. My questions are;;

What services are absolutely essential to Cisco Works. I have seen tomcat, JRE, and all the CWVMS services. All of them are running but may be I am missing something.

I have read that I should open my browser, go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and uncheck the "use Java ..." under the Java Sun option. I have also read that I must CHECK that option. What gives? I am using Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106

By the way, there was a time I had a similar problem and uninstalled Java. The first time therafter I tried to log onI got the JRProxy Server error message but then minutes after, CWVMS went and downlaoded the appropriate Java and installed it and it worked. I noticed however that although the message from within CWVMS might suggest that the appropriate Java is 1.4.1., even on those occassions when CWVMS downloaded the appropriate Java it was the Java 1.4.2 which has both 1.4.2 and 1.3 version.

The first thing to check when VMS seems slow is if your hostname is registered in DNS correctly.

I would also recommend that you consider upgrading to VMS 2.2 Update 1 & a few hotfixes. This version also supports Windows SP 4. This will allow you to use the most current versions of IDSMC, CSA MC, Pix MC, which in turn may help you with your other problems.

Here's the URL for the latest VMS software:

Let us know how this goes.

thanks

I have uninstalled VMS2.2 completely and installed VMA 2.2 update1. I have also gone to the www you gave me for update. The problem is that there are oh so many updates on that site. In any case, I downloaded the so called "bundled update" which supposedly contains update for more than one piece of VMS. The title of d file is CiscoWorks_VMS_2.2_Update_1.exe I have also downloaded another patch cmf2.2-win-CSCsa044711.tar I just tried to re-install this CSCsa044711 patch again because I am still NOT GETTING A LOG ON PAGE WHEN I START CISCO WORKS.. But it came back with message that I have already applied the patch. With regards to the patch cwcs2.2-win-CSCsa11234.tar Cisco did NOT indicate which file to install, but I have attempted to install the .perl files. I am unable to install CSCsa04092-1 file which is in the adm folder of tHh archive. I get this message... you do nothave the manadatory patch CSCsa04092-1 installed and a prompt whetehr to continue installation of this ACLM patch. I entered Y for yes to indicate installation, but when I open the file again, it gave me the same message, although I expect that it would just say that the patch ash been insttalled.

What exactly do I need to do again? I have installed and uninstaleld and reinstalled JAVA 1.4.1_02 many timess, and I just need to know exactly what is going wrong. Yes, I have upgraded the machine to Windows 2000 SP4, disabled Terminal services etc etc... What more need to be done. By the way, it worked before IN SPITE of terminal services, and prior to the upgrades, so what is the problem.

I would appreciate a timely response.

Hey -

Sorry to not respond sooner as I am off this week.

Here's the steps I use to install VMS.....

1) Autorun CD and Install Common Services from CD

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/vms

(this servers as a good CD to install from)

2) Autorun CD - some patches auto-install

3) Install Update 1 for VMS 2.2

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/vms-3des

4) Install IDS MC 1.2.3 (not from CD)

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/mgmt-ctr-ids-app

5) Install IDS MC Updates

5a) idsmdc1.2.3-win-CSCsa16682

5b) idsmdc1.2.3-win-CSCee60913

available from same link above

6) Log In locally on VMS machine. If things work fine, then I login remotely.

So this procedure will install VMS Common Services and IDS Mgmt Ctr & Sec Mon. Which other VMS or Cisco Works components are you attempting to install on the same machine? As a side note, LMS and RWAN cannot be installed on the same machine due to RME conflicts with VMS.

Let us know,

peter

Thanks for your very exhaustive response. It was quite helpful. However, I am havign some problems with the patch installation (step 5 of your email). When I unzipped the idsmdc1.2.3-win-CSCsa16682 file I noticed that there were two other zipped files inside the folder. Secodnly there are two text files in the folder, one is README and the other is a 16682.txt file or something similar to that.

Anyway, they each gave two different suggstions on how to install the patch. The .txt file suggests that one navigate to the folder where the file was unzipped and issue a install command. The other README file suggests that one should navigate to the original folder where CiscoWorks was installed and then issue a command to install. Now in both insturctions, there is a reference to dir in the command. the question is should I replace the dir in the command or just drop it once I navigate to the right folder.

I would appreciate if you just break it down as you did the previous posting. Also, after the first unzip, I noticed 2 other zip files, should these files be unzipped again or just left as it is in the folder in which the first unzip was done.

Thanks

I had to mess around with Java a bit to get it to work. Here are some ideas.

1/ Uninstall all versions of Java

2/ Look for unobvious versions of Java ie. IBM Java and uninstall that also

3/Look in the registry and do a search for Java. Carefully blow that away too **** This solved it for us on one pesky machine. I bet this is what is getting you.

OK so Java is uninstalled now. Now try to log into Cisco VMS. It will complain that Java isn't installed and suggest a link to install it from. Try installing using that link.

Hopefully everything is cool now. If you have other products that use Java (ie Enterasys Dragon) you may consider managing it from a different server to avoid trouble.

Good luck,

Jeff
