I have figured this problem out, finally!
On the Setup | Network top section enter a "Domain Name" that matches the workgroup name for the computers on the network. On the Setup | Network | WAN Setting | Configuration (whatever interface your are configuring), let everything be dynamically assigned or enter in the information you wish to use. Remember one of the DNS entries from the setup for use in the next step.
Go to the DHCP | DHCP Setup | DNS section and enter in the "Static DNS 1" server IP as the IP of your RV042 (being used as a Gateway). This will allow the RV042 to dynamically assign the DNS to your DHCP clients that includes itself for lookup. Enter the DNS number remembered from the last step for the "Static DNS 2" server IP. Under DHCP | DHCP Setup | DNS Local Database enter your DNS entries for the static IPs you have set; single word. "Add to list" for each entry, and Save.
Go to System Management | Restart <-- Restart the RV042-->Give a few minutes for things to propagate.
For local network connections, typing the single DNS term into a browser should now resolve to the stored IP for the device. For PPTP VPN connections to resolve you must place the "Domain Name" used in step 1 behind the single-term DNS name you entered for the device; for example, device.domain
Another way to configure this, I have my PPTP VPN connection setup to automatically ad the "Domain Name". In Windows, this setting is in the Advanced TCP/IP Settings for the IPv4 connection. Add the "Domain Name" to the "DNS suffix for this connection:" section. This is working for me. I hope you have the same experience.

RV042 V03 : Firmware Version : v4.2.3.07
As Gateway/DHCP server
Non Active Directory network used, workgroup names for the PCs are used and configured to match, and to match the "Domain Name" from the first step.

I have a similar problem when trying to configure the router to dial-in and connect to the Internet via MODEMs configured as Transparent Bridges. It seems the router simply can't "dial" or something. I allowed the MODEMs to connect and issue their IPs via their DHCP services and I was able to connect and bond the two connections, as planned, but no joy getting an IP from ISP...

I am wondering if we can collectively comment on the need for IP range content filtering/access restrictions on the small business routers. I was thinking that the functionality would be similar to the WRT610n, in terms of filtering, but the application is to the entire connection base of this router. I need to control things for a specified range of IPs on a specified schedule. Can firmware be implemented that will allow us to perform these MUCH needed functions?

Hello, I am attempting to connect DSL service from Windstream through 2 Actiontec GT701D MODEMs in bridge mode to the RV042 router. First I have connected the modem and signed into my ISP via PPPOe and Internet service is established. Next, I reset the MODEM and configure it for transparent bridging. Then I connect the bridged Ethernet cord from the MODEM into the WAN1 of the RV042. I configure the RV042 to connect via WAN1 as PPPOe and enter the connection username and password. Then I go the the system summary screen of the RV042 and there is a "connected" status, but there are no numbers in the IP, DNS, or Gateway blocks. I select "connect" to try to establish a connection and the process ends without connecting (no numbers). I have tried this with WAN2 with no luck also. The MODEMs have 3 transparent bridging modes: RFC1483 Transparent Bridging, RFC1483 via DHCP, and RFC1483 via Static IP. Each of these options has varying available options for ISP connection. I don't have a static IP for these DSL lines of service so that option isn't for me, I think. I have tried so many varients of these settings and not had any success. The MODEM status screen shows DSL Status as connected (in RFC1483 TB) but ISP status as "Transparently Bridged". I cannot get the RV042 to "dial" a connection through to my ISP via PPPOe settings. I don't understand. I am wanting to configure my RV042 this way to eliminate the MODEMs in the connection scenario and result in only the RV042 to configure. What am I missing? Thanks
