Another good place to check is from IE Tools menu, under General TAB, click on the Setting TAB under Temporary Internet files, and then view objects. This will report if the Java Runtime is installed correctly, and if it is corrupt or not.

Hi - I think that you do need admin privileges to install the URT client on XP and 2K boxes. After that the service runs as a Local System service so will just carry on happily. That is a massive deployment, so you plan on scripting it? Good luck.
