Sorry, I have since come to the conclusion that it is an issue with a slow dialup connection (and no accelerator card on appliance). No one else has had the issue and since the user has gone to high speed, it has not occured again.
Thanks Mustafa. The laptop I was using had com 1 reserved for another program. Grabbed a new laptop and got right in. I'm going to attempt the upgrade again this weekend so I'll let you know how it goes.
