iPadOS 15 devices: Failed to retrive configuration

itskdog

Hi all,

Has anyone had any luck enrolling iPadOS 15 into SM via DEP/ADE lately?

As soon as I connect to Wi-Fi, I just get "Failed to retrieve configuration".

I haven't changed any settings, and this has worked before.

Any idea how I can fix this?

You can try a few things, such as verifying the ADE token in ABM and Meraki, creating a new ADE profile with authentication disabled, restoring the iPad to factory settings and retrying setup, and avoiding URL enrollment unless you're using manual post-setup enrollment.

If the issue persists, I suggest you open a Meraki support case.

I am not a Cisco employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.

Please, if this post was useful, leave your kudos and mark it as solved.

Check your tokens as suggested but also make sure there is nothing upstream stopping the device from connecting, not sure what type of iPad you have but if it has USB-c try using a ethernet adaptor and see if that works.

Hi itskdog,

This is related to a known Apple issue that causes any device with iOS/iPadOS below version 16 to fail ADE enrollment.

Additionally, attempting to use Apple Configurator with the "Add this device to Apple Business Manager" option selected will also result in enrollment failure.

We have already engaged Apple Enterprise support.

Feel free to create a support ticket and DM me the ticket number so you can be updated when we have more information.

When I spoke with Apple Support, they confirmed that enrolling iOS 15 devices into Apple Business Manager using Apple Configurator is no longer supported

That's enrolling into ASM/ABM though - these devices are already on ASM (and were added by the reseller, not by AC2 - we don't even have any Macs to use AC2 with), but it's just going from there onto the MDM that's the issue.

I was able to successfully supervise and enroll them into my MDM using Apple Configurator 2, so you’ll need access to a Mac to replicate this. It works as expected.

I now have a fleet of fully supervised iPads running iOS 15, enrolled via the Apple Configurator 2 – Manual Enrollment method.
