Can anyone please explain the actual functionality of UDP Header in VXLAN. Vxlan overlay is basically mac-in-udp, for l2 extension over l3, the concept is ok but I can not able to find out the actual role of UDP here.
Hope you might be aware that VXLAN is about encapsulating L2 frames over L3 network. Any node to which a packet is destinated to will use the "IP ProtocolWhen a L2 frame is to be encapsulated with L3 header (as in NVO3 scenarios), there is no "Protocol" field to understand what is being encapsulated. There is no "Protocol" field for L2 frame. So the VXLAN is proposed to use UDP and the UDP port number will indicate that this is VXLAN packet.
