Will Implementing vPC Pairing Between Leaf Switches Cause L2 Downtime?

Andi Bintang

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this community and super excited to join the discussions here. I have a big curiosity about something I'm working on right now.

I've just added a few new leaf switches to my ACI fabric and I'm planning to set up vPC pairing between them. My data center is quite complex, and I'm a bit worried about the possible impact on the network.

So, here's my big question. will implementing vPC pairing between leaf switches cause any Layer 2 (L2) downtime in a real production environment? or maybe what steps should I take to ensure everything goes smoothly without disrupting the existing network?

Thanks a lot for your help and advice!

Hello Andi,

Below are the precautionary steps before configuring vPC in Cisco ACI using the APIC:

  1. Pre-Implementation Planning
  • Review Documentation: Ensure you understand the Cisco ACI vPC configuration process by reviewing the official documentation.
  • Network Assessment: Identify the devices and connections that will be affected by the vPC implementation.
  • Backup Configuration: Ensure you have a backup of the current configuration and a rollback plan.

  1. Preparation
  • Firmware Compatibility: Verify that the firmware versions on the leaf switches are compatible with the vPC feature.
  • Configuration Consistency: Ensure that the configurations on the leaf switches are consistent and that there are no conflicting settings.

I hope you already know how to configure vPC, it’s quite simple and straight forward. Feel free if you still have doubt.

Happy configuration!!
