Background...
We have 2 Datacentres in the CBD connected by a Gigabit fibre link. These sites are segregated at layer 3 so that there are no hosts at the 2 sites sharing the same vlan. This is in accordance with Cisco recommended best practices for limiting broadcast domains and maintaining stable networks.
In each DataCentre we run dual Catalyst 6509s (Sup1A - MSFC2) to provide adequate levels of redundancy for offsite traffic, interfloor traffic and local host connections. We run the 6509s with Hybrid software setup.
Requirement...
Our major critical application runs on a Sun host at Datacentre #1.
The managers of this host wish to run a live failover host at Datacentre #2. (The data on this standby host would be kept up to date by a back end process between the 2 servers.)
A diagram of what we need to do is attached....
Now the Question....
If we change our 6509 configuration to run Native IOS, is it possible to achieve the live failover scenario via IOS SLB?
If so, do we need any extra hardware/modules or is it all handled by the IOS?
PS...We are not interested in load balancing the traffic - if the Master Server is online we want all clients to access the Master, if the Master Server goes down, we want instant seamless redirection of all requests to the Failover host at the other DataCentre.
Any advice or configuration tips you can provide would be most appreciated. Thankyou for your time.

Hi,
I believe IOS SLB won't work with your scenario.
See all the restrictions here :
The CSM will for sure be able to do it but it might be an expensive solution for a simple backup mechanism.
Would it be possible to give the same ip address to btoh servers - as a loopback - and you advertise this ip address in your igp using the metrics to make sure all traffic goes to the active server.
You will have stateless failover - no statefull.
If you need statefull, only choice is the CSM.
Regards,
Gilles.
