Per documentation I am to enter
config-register 1
after the new "boot software" statement
But bootvar already shows this
CLT1/Admin# show bootvar
BOOT variable = "disk0:c6ace-t1k9-mz.A2_2_0.bin"
Configuration register is 0x1
do i still need to enter the statment if the bootvars show 0x1

Not really. If you only need to upgrade a new ACE SW, keep the config register with default setting which is 0x1.
"configuration register to 0x1" tells ACE to perform auto boot and use startup-config file. Whaverver you have on the startup config, the ACE will load the SW in the startup. (ie. boot system image:xxxxxxx)
