The sysadmin account used by Cockpit (or logging directly into the underlying Ubuntu) is separate from CML app accounts. From the CML docs:
"During installation, a system administration account is created, sysadmin by default, which can be used to log into the System Administration Cockpit. There is no default password for this account: the login credentials are user-defined during initial deployment and differ from the initial application user."
I do not know if or how you can recover a lost linux root password, but I suspect you cannot. If all else fails, you can download your labs, install 2.6 from scratch, and upload the labs again. Should probably de-register CML license first and re-register with new installation.
BTW... there is a separate community for CML-PE on The Cisco Learning Network Site: https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/s/topic/0TO3i00000094ZjGAI/cisco-modeling-labs-personal-community
