Hi. I have an environment where I have a Cisco ASA 5506 firewall and a few Cisco 3560 100mbps switches. However I have no router. My Internet connection is an Ethernet handoff right in to my ASA. From here I have vpn tunnels off the ASA to other sites, etc.
I was curious to know in a case like this, if there is no router in place, what protocol does the ASA use by default to route traffic in the network?

It depends of how the ASA is configured , the ASA supports static routing , BGP, EIGRP and OSPF.
If there is no default route configured the ASA drops the traffic.
Hope it helps

Confirmed on my end it was static routing. Thanks for the help!

Yep :)
In the case where no routing protocol is used at all, you are left with static routing. Meaning, you will need to configure individual routes manually into the configuration of the asa. This configuration is static and does not change by itself. Once you configure it, the route will stay in place permanently.
