i am trying to connect a L3 switch to one of the router eth ports whereas i have a machiene on the 3500 series switch mentioned earlier in the series of 71.2.X.X i m putting the L3 switch in the same range but why cant i configure aaa and access it via the machiene (telnet)mentioned earlier...no doubt the other ports on 3500 series are in a different range....

If both the router and the machine are addressed using IP's in the same subnet and if the ports of the 3550 area in the default state (ie L2 ports) and if th eports to which the router and the machine area connected are in the same VLAN (VLAN1 by default or any VLAN you have configured), then reachability will not be a problem.
