You CANNOT replicate between different ACS versions, not even minor versions within the same major version. Definately NOT between 3.3 and 4.0 because there was major database changes and the replication will fail.
From what I've seen in the field there has been quite a few customers upgrade to 4.0, plus all new devices are shipping with that now. Haven't seen or heard of any major problems with it.
