ISE 2.1. encountering a situation while creating endpoint. Manually entering a MAC address under context visibility>endpoints the operation fails. Typically as this occurs the MAC address is already in the database and can be found by searching for the MAC so that it can then be edited but now I cannot find the MAC address. Appreciate suggestions as to what I cab try to resolve this

If you cannot find the MAC under Context Visibility > Endpoints, then it doesn't sound promising. Are you sure you don't have some search filter in place from a previous search? That sometimes catches me out.
How about looking in Administration > Identity Management > Groups > Endpoint Identity Groups and then checking all the Groups below it?
If you really cannot find the MAC anywhere, and yet, unable to add that same MAC in manually under Context Visibility, then I would open a TAC case.
