4. New attacks on networks are being developed by hackers continuoulsy. It helps to protect against things like worms, viruses, access attacks, denial of service attacks, etc all of which are expensive to rectify unless stopped early by your IPS.If your sigs are out of date then they won't recognise these new attacks and so therefore let the traffic through.
It becomes like an arms race as to who has the better arsenal to either propel hackers from your network or for hackers to be able to penetrate your network.
