Hi Guys;

I like to know if someone can give me a clue what is going on with the thruput on my ASA 5510, We just changed to a new service provider that is providing a line with 12 meg syncronous access to the web. that means 12 meg. upload and download.

we are getting about 11 megs download but the upload is about half a meg.???? We dont understand what is creating this problem, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jay

Can you please check the speed and duplex on the ASA interfaces that connects to the ISP? Please kindly make sure that it's configured as "auto".

Hi Jennifer;

Thank you for your quick help, I make sure the paramaters for the hardware are configured in Auto, I changed both of them.

I am running 8.0.(4), Do you recommend upgrading the software??? I also have 256 memory, do you recommend and upgrade for better performance?? In addition I have attache the current configuration in case you have any suggestions, We are runing with outside DNS that took some doing to get configure, maybe that's were the bottle neck is???

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.!!!!!

Thank you

Jay Fuente

Outside DNS wouldn't cause you any bottle neck if your upload is 0.5 meg, and dns query and reply is a very small packet and it's UDP, so I wouldn't think that causes the issue.

You mention that you just changed ISP, and from what I gather, you don't have that issue before running traffic through the same ASA?

If you don't, it is probably worth bypassing the ASA and see if you get the same result. If you do, then you should talk to your new ISP about it.

Dear Jeniffer;

You are the BEST!!!!

I change the port to Auto and the upload now wwent from .5 to 5.4 MEg, I stil dont get full speed as the download is 10 meg.

Any suggestions???

what else should I look at???

I sent you a copy of my configuration, maybe some suggestions?? I dont know what else to do.

Thank you for all your help.

Do you suggest a memory upgrade, I am running with 256, can i upgrade to 1Gig???

Thanks

Great, one step better than earlier...that's good news.

It's not really a configuration issue, so nothing much within the config that will help.

How is your traffic going through the ASA? Do you have a lot, or it's just normal traffic flow? Can you share the output of "show traffic" and "show interface"

Have you also tried directly connecting a laptop to the ISP bypassing the ASA, what download and upload speed did you get?

You can upgrade it to version 8.0.5 as certainly there are quite a number bugs in version 8.0.4.

Memory shouldn't really matter with this version, however, you can certainly upgrade to 1 GB memory, here is the part# ASA5510-MEM-1GB= for your reference if you decide to upgrade it to the 1 GB.

Hi Jennifer;

I conected a P.C. directly to the ISP 2800, the thruput is 10 meg download 8.2 meg. download.

When I connect the  ASA5510  the download speed goes to 8.2 but the upload goes to 5.2 or less ???? with only the p.c. connected to the local port and only running the speed diagnostics tool from the vendor Windstream.com??

Sugestions.??

Thank you

Jay Fuente

Have you also checked your other interfaces speed/duplex settings?  I would suggest that you also check the inside interface of the ASA that connects to your PC.

What throughput did you get when you were using the old ISP for download and upload via ASA?

You will definitely not be getting the maximum throughput as per the ISP line when going through the ASA because ASA is not a switch/router. ASA has firewall feature where it keeps track of connections, etc etc.

You will fine that if you just upload a small file the throughput might not be so great, but if you download a larger file, you might increase the throughput. It's not a flat throughput measurement if you just measure it once via a speed test tool.
