We configuring ASA 8.4.2 in Active/Standby failover mode with two cables. What would be the best design configuring etherchannel on ASAs or have one active and one standby redundant cable ?

I do not believe that it is possible to configure etherchannel for failover on the ASA. If you have two cables available then the recommendation from Cisco is that you use one cable as the failover interface (used to check on the health of the peer and to perform failover activity) and use the other cable to pass state information between the ASAs.
